Why “Give Back” To God?
Giving our tithes and offerings reflects a grateful heart that wants to “give back” to God a portion of what He has given us—in reality, what is already His. In 1 Chronicles 29:14 the Bible says:
For all things come from You, and from Your hand we have given You.
1 Chronicles 29:14 [NASB]
Absolutely EVERYTHING that we have – our breath, our lives, our time, our talents, and our treasures – ALL comes from the Lord’s hand; and it all belongs to Him. He entrusts us with the responsibility to be good stewards of HIS stuff; and to do good with HIS stuff. So our “giving” is not giving TO the Lord. Our “giving" is giving BACK to the Lord.
"Giving Back" To God Is An Act of Worship
In Proverbs 3:9 the Bible says,
Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the first and best part of all your income. [GWT]
The word “honor” is the word, “glorify.” We are to “glorify the Lord with our wealth.” Our “giving back to God” is an act of worship; and every bit as much an act of worship as singing worship songs.
“Giving Back” Reflects The POSTURE of Our Hearts
Jesus said in Matthew 6:20-21:
“Store up for yourselves treasures in heaven… For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Jesus tells us that our wallets point to the “lord” of our hearts.
“Giving Back” Reflects The PRIORITIES of Our Hearts
“The purpose of tithing is to teach you always to put God first in your lives.” [TLB]
“Giving back” is our opportunity to show God that He is first in our lives.
